Shabbat

Shabbat preparation checklist

Shabbat is easier when the week has been leading up to it. Here is a short list for the coming Shabbat, Saturday, October 3, 2026.

Candle lighting and Havdalah times are on this week’s times. If you would like a Shabbat meal to go to, see Shabbat dinner. Your ticks are kept on this device only, and clear each week.

0 of 18 done

Early in the week

Plan the menu and count who is coming
Shop for food, challah, wine or grape juice, and candles
Invite a guest. Hospitality is a big part of Shabbat

Friday morning and afternoon

Cook the Shabbat food
Set up the warming tray or hot plate, if you use one, before Shabbat starts
Set the table with two challahs, the Kiddush cup and a cover for the challah
Set timers for any lights you want on or off
Shower and put on Shabbat clothes
Put your phone on silent and plan to leave it aside

Before candle lighting

Check the candle lighting time for this week
Put coins in the tzedakah box
Set out the candles, with enough for everyone who lights
Light the candles and say the blessing

At the table

Say Kiddush over the wine or grape juice
Wash and say the blessing over the challah
Share a thought on the Torah portion

When Shabbat ends

Set out the Havdalah candle, a cup of wine or grape juice, and spices
Make Havdalah after nightfall
