Find your Hebrew birthday

Everyone has one, and most people have never been told theirs. It takes a moment to work out, and nothing you type here is stored.

Why it moves

The Jewish calendar follows the moon, and a lunar year is about eleven days shorter than the one on your wall — so a leap month is added seven times in nineteen years to keep Passover in the spring. Your Hebrew birthday lands on a different ordinary date each year because of it. It is the same reason a yahrzeit moves, and the reason both are worth writing down somewhere that works them out for you.

What the day is for

In Chabad a birthday is treated as a day to do something with rather than a day to get through. The Rebbe asked people to mark it: give a little extra Tzedakah, learn something, make one resolution for the year ahead, and begin saying the chapter of Tehillim that matches the year you are entering — one higher than the years you have completed. Many people gather a few friends in the evening it begins.
