A widely kept custom: give tzedakah before you daven, or before lighting Shabbat candles, as an act of merit that opens the day.

Many have the custom of putting a coin in a tzedakah box before Shacharit each morning, and again before candle lighting on Friday afternoon. Some say a verse of Tehillim connected to their own name, or the name of somebody they are davening for, as they give.
